Oh How Sweet It Is: Sweets From the Earth

Like many of us these days, I have a growing number of friends who are avoiding gluten or wheat in their diets. This means I’m constantly keeping my eyes open for gluten-free products, especially sweet ones. And wow, am I glad that I do, because I discovered Sweets of the Earth. Their Flourless Cashew Cookie may just make the best gluten-free cookie out there. Actually, forget best gluten-free cookie, they may be one of the best cookies I’ve ever tasted out of a box. Period. It’s also vegan, mostly organic and GMO-free.

Sweets from the Earth is a Toronto-based specialty bakery. They have two types of products: gluten-free and nut-free. Each are made in their own dedicated facility to avoid accidental contamination with even trace amounts of nuts or gluten. In both cases the ingredients are carefully monitored and either come from certified suppliers or are periodically tested for the presence of gluten or nut allergens. In addition to cookies, they also have cakes, cheesecakes, squares, muffins, pies. In other words, all sorts of yummy to satisfy a sweet tooth. Oh, did I mention that everything is also vegan, so dairy and egg-free? Also, they try to use organic ingredients and all ingredients are non-GMO.

At $8.25 for a 300 gram box (15 cookies) of cashew cookies, they are definitely treats to be savoured. Sweets of the Earth products are available across Canada. Visit their web page and enter your postal code to find a list of their retailers near you.

PS. Would you believe that my first taste of a Sweets of the Earth cookie was actually a nut-free chocolate chip on an Air Canada flight between Montreal and London, England. The cookie was in my vegan meal. In addition to being delicious and vegan, it caught my eye because many of the ingredients were organic.  Kudos to Air Canada for going beyond vegan and offering something that is also free of GMO ingredients and mostly organic!

Mmm . . . I don’t have any dietary intolerances, but these sound so yummy, since I love cashews! On a related note, “Kozy Shack” has a sugar free, gluten free rice pudding that is the best I’ve ever tasted that is not homemade. (It does contain eggs, so not vegan.) It is light and creamy, and not too sweet. It’s Devon’s favourite lunchbox dessert!
