Beef, Labelling, Oil and Flowers

My weekly roundup of articles, websites or videos that caught my recent attention:

Raising beef on grass. Two articles came through my news feeds at about the same time last week. One was a study showing that grassfeed beef in Australia has a higher carbon footprint than grain-finished beef, the other focussed on the lifestyle of farmers and herd at a grass-fed beef farm in Ohio. The two are an interesting juxtaposition beside each other because I think the first article on carbon footprint completely misses the bigger picture of the health and welfare of families, communities, farm animals, and the environment. This comes through in the Ohio article. Instead the study focused on one very ‘hot’ area of the environment debate: climate change. The study was funded by Meat and Livestock Australia.

Protected Designation of Origin Labeling. The folks over at Sustain Ontario have pulled together a quick overview of protected designation of origin (PDO) labeling and how small Ontario producers may be able to use this type of labelling to their advantage. In Quebec, PDO is better known as appellation d’origine controllée, and is currently the topic of debate for some Quebec ice cider producers.

Omnivore’s Ottawa by Ron Eade. Embedded in last week’s “Supermarket Specials” (Onivore’s Ottawa is the food blog for the Ottawa Citizen) was a brilliant little rant about the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and our food choices. Ignore the food specials, but do read the rant.

Fuchsia Epicerie Fleurs. Up! magazine featured a very nice review of Fuschia, a popular vegetarian restaurant on the plateau. Everything they sell is made with flowers. Really! Check out the review then check out the restaurant and boutique.

Eating Animals: A Review. Finally, 100 Mile Mel posted a review of the book Eating Animals by Jonathon Safran Foer on her website last week. The books looks intriguing. But don’t take my word for it, go read the review and then decide for yourself whether it’s worth picking up.
