Food, Inc. Comes to the Small Screen

If you haven’t seen the Academy Award-nominated Food, Inc. yet, then tune into your local PBS station on Wednesday, April 21st at 9pm for its television premiere. It’s being aired across the US on the PBS documentary series Point of View and will be accompanied Notes on Milk, a short version of the 2007 feature documentary Milk in the Land: Ballad of an American Drink.

PBS is actually doing a big splash with this premiere and is encouraging folks to host a Farm, Inc. potluck and watch the film together. Their site has a party planner and checklist, as well as recipe ideas. If you register as potluck host, then you’re eligible to win one of 60 gift baskets.

I’d be doing this myself, except that it’s on the same date as the (sold out) Slow Food Montreal monthly 5 à 7 Slow. Last month was local cheese and wine; this month it’s a maple extravaganza. Stay tuned for details on next month’s get together.

Speaking of slow food, next Sunday Appetite for Books is hosting Geoff Andrews, author of The Slow Food Story. He will be talking about food and farming, and reading selection from his book.  Local farmer Nasser Boumenna of Les Jardins d’Arlington, an organic farm in the Eastern Townships, and Kurt from La Coop La Maison Verte, will also be joining the discussion. This is a free event but please call the store at 514-369-2002 to confirm your attendance.

If you’re comfortable in French, Ashtanga Yoga Montreal is hosting a discussion on ethics and food this Saturday at 4pm. The speaker is Élise Desaulniers, a holistic nutritionist. The discussion will look at the impact of our food choices and explore ways to “do good while eating well.”

Wow. We really are spoiled for choice!

If you know of any events happening in Montreal (or other Canadian towns and cities), please let us know so we can consider listing them in the events section of our website and on our Facebook Page.

Actually, CBC already broadcast Food, inc. on The Passionate Eye on April 11th and will also be re-broadcasting it tomorrow, the 17th at 7pm on the CBC News Network. http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/passionateeyeshowcase/
Its great that it is being so widely broadcast, especially in the lead-up to Earth Day.

Wow. Thanks for that information! I’m also glad it’s getting so widely broadcast. I’m sure the lead-up to Earth Day is no coincidence.

I liked Ebert’s review (non-review?) of Food, Inc:

      Thanks for that link!

Deconstructing dinner had a segment recently that looked at how almost all of Canada’s beef is controlled by two (or maybe it’s one now that there was that corporate merger not long back) meta packing companies. Nuts. Stay tuned for a post in the coming weeks.
